A market of small shops

Levinsky Market is not a market hall but a handful of streets around Levinsky Street. Park HaMesila and Neve Tzedek are close by. Many shops were opened by families who came from Greece, Turkey and Iran, and some are still run by the next generations.

You buy spices by weight, try cheese and olives at the counter, and drink gazoz, sparkling water with fruit, flowers and herbs.

What to buy

  • Za'atar: herbs with sesame, for bread and olive oil.
  • Sumac: ground red berries, sour like lemon, for salads and onions.
  • Baharat: a warm spice mix for meat and rice.
  • Bourekas: pastries with cheese, potato or spinach.
  • Gazoz: every glass looks different.

Friday at the market

Friday morning is the best time to come: everyone shops for Shabbat, buys flowers and meets friends for coffee. By early afternoon the shops close, and in the evening the city goes quiet.
