A piece of German history

Lev Ha'ir was laid out on the plan of the Scottish town planner Patrick Geddes in the 1920s. In the 1930s, architects from Europe arrived, many of them fleeing the Nazis.

Some had studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Together they built thousands of buildings in the International Style, and in 2003 the White City of Tel Aviv became a UNESCO World Heritage site.

How to spot a Bauhaus building

  • Long, rounded balconies that give shade.
  • Thermometer windows: narrow, tall windows along the stairwell.
  • Buildings on pillars, so the sea breeze can pass underneath.
  • Light facades and flat roofs, built for the Mediterranean heat.

Liebling Haus

At Idelson 29 stands the Max Liebling House, built in 1936 in the Bauhaus style. It was restored with funding from the German government and is now a center for the preservation of the White City.

For Ron, it is the clearest link between Berlin and Tel Aviv.

Living in a listed building

Many buildings in Lev Ha'ir are listed. That means rules for renovation and alterations, and often longer approvals.

Older buildings frequently have no lift and no mamad. None of this has to rule out a purchase, but it is worth knowing before you fall in love with a balcony.

Lev Ha'ir, around Rothschild Boulevard, Sheinkin Street and Dizengoff Street, suits buyers who want to live in the middle of the city, love architecture and walk everywhere. If you need parking, a lift and a modern layout, look at renovated or new buildings, or at other neighborhoods.
